Elena Kagan Will Be The Most Unqualified Justice In History
May 11th
NBC News is reporting Elena Kagan is Barack Obama’s nominee to replace the liberal lion, Justice John Paul Stevens. Kagan is a remarkably poor choice.
The stunning lack of curiosity and involvement in the important legal issues of her age, not to mention the law itself, and remarkable absence of compelling written work and record on the part of Elena Kagan has been previously covered in detail by Glenn Greenwald.

The first Barbie dolls were introduced by Mattel, Inc. in 1959. Produced in Japan, their clothing was hand-stitched by home workers. Creator Ruth Handler based them on a German doll called Bild Lilli, which was itself based on a comic strip character. Since then, of course, the Barbie doll has become a household name. Having been around that long, Barbie’s been through quite a few editions.

May 10th
CNN) — Move over, Emma. There’s a new queen in town.
Isabella dethroned Emma as the top name for girls born last year, according to the Social Security Administration’s annual list of most popular baby names, released Saturday.
Jacob, on the other hand, held on as the most popular boy’s name for the 11th year in a row.
The Social Security Administration started compiling name lists in 1997. And as in years past, the influence of pop culture is reflected in the names picked for newborns.
The boy’s name that rocketed up the list the fastest is Cullen — the name of the lead character in the popular “Twilight” book series.
Cullen’s girlfriend in the books is Bella, short for Isabella.

Most Americans Think Immigration Is a Serious Issue, But Other Issues Rank Higher
May 10th
Most Americans think the issue of illegal immigration is a serious one, according to a CBS News/New York Times Poll conducted earlier this month. That view has changed little over the past few years.

Still, the poll finds that addressing immigration is not a top priority for Americans. Issues like the economy and jobs, health care, and the budget deficit rank higher in importance.
Polling was conducted before Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed an immigration bill into law that requires police officers in that state to question a person about their immigration status if they appear to be in the U.S. illegally.

Zoologger: The most bizarre life story on Earth?
May 10th
Zoologger is our weekly column highlighting extraordinary animals – and occasionally other organisms – from around the world.
Species: Symbion pandora
Habitat: In the eastern Atlantic Ocean – on the mouthparts of Norway lobsters (also known as Dublin Bay prawns or langoustines)
There’s no question that discovering a new species is very cool. But how about discovering a new phylum?
A phylum is a broad division in taxonomy: all vertebrates, for example, from fish to humans, are in the chordate phylum. In 1995, Peter Funch and Reinhardt Møbjerg Kristensen, both then at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, discovered an animal so unlike any other that a new phylum – Cycliophora – had to be created just for it.
