‘Thriller’ voted most influential pop video – Music

LONDON – Michael Jackson’s video for his hit single “Thriller” has been voted the most influential in pop music history, according to the results of a poll released on Monday.
The survey, commissioned by MySpace, interviewed more than 1,000 music fans. They made their choice from a long list of 20 videos selected by music and entertainment critics.

As our long national nightmare, the American Idol audition season, winds down, let us pause and reflect on the most notable achievements of the year thus far. As Ryan said, “It has been a long journey for all of us.” And while I’d like to say that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, I’m not even sure we’ve entered the tunnel yet. So without further delay and in the spirit of this week’s Academy Award nominations, we present our own honors.

Plasma arc speakers – the most amazing speakers on earth
Plasma ion tweeters are an evolution the “singing arc”, invented by William Duddells 1900. He basically reworked a carbon arc lamp – which were known for being fairly noisy.
Now, William found that by varying the voltage to the arc, it changed the sound that was produced…. Bingo.
Much later a fellow by the name of Siegfried Klein got involved and tuned it by putting the arc in a small quartz tube. Coupling this to a horn, he was able to produce a speaker and even a microphone. I’m really not too sure if I’d want to tempt fate by putting my mouth too close to one of those things though.
